Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting: 11 dead, 6 injuredPittsburgh synagogue shooting: 11 people were killed and 6 injured (4 police officers and 2 others)in a shooting at  the Tree of Life synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighbourhood of Pittsburgh. This incident took place on Saturday morning. No children were among the dead. About 100 people were in the synagogue at the time.

The assailant, has been identified by law enforcement officials as Robert D. Bowers, who fired for several minutes and was leaving  synagogue when the officers, dressed in tactical gear and armed with rifles, met him at the door.

Robert Bowers, 46, of suburban Baldwin, surrendered to the authorities after the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in a leafy suburb in the heart of its Jewish community in Pennsylvania, that is home to several synagogues, kosher restaurants and bakeries.  According to a federal law enforcement official, he made anti-Semitic statements during the shooting and targeted Jews in posts on social media that are focus of investigation.

Robert Bowers was injured by gunfire, although the authorities said it was unclear whether those wounds were self-inflicted or whether the police had shot him. He was in stable condition Saturday at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Federal prosecutors have filed hate crime charges against Robert Bowers. The Investigators recovered a rifle and 3 handguns from the scene of the shooting. According to the Authorities, the suspect acted alone.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said, “These incidents usually occur in other cities but today it has hit home in the city of Pittsburgh.”

US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter, “This evil Anti-Semitic attack is an assault on humanity. It will take all of us working together to extract the poison of Anti-Semitism from our world. We must unite to conquer hate..” “All of America is in mourning over the mass murder of Jewish Americans at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. We pray for those who perished and their loved ones, and our hearts go out to the brave police officers who sustained serious injuries…”
