Mohammad Azharuddin, Former Indian cricket captain,former MP from Moradabad and the ex-cricketer who captained India in the 1990s, has been appointed as Telangana Congress Working President today.
Mohammad Azharuddin will be the 4th working president and appointed ahead of the Telangana Assembly elections.
Mohammad Azharuddin, who is interested on contesting from Secunderabad Parliamentary constituency, said that if the party wishes he won’t mind contesting from any other constituency in Telangana.
Mohammad Azharuddin interacted with media in Hyderabad today and demanded an apology from Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) for losing control on a person who questioned him on the unfulfilled promise of 12% reservations to Muslims. He said KCR should have answered the question instead of intimidating the man who posed it.
Last year, the Congress’ Telangana unit had urged Mohammad Azharuddin to contest either the state assembly polls or the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, from the state.
Mohammad Azharuddin, 55, is a former MP. The batsman, who played for India in three successive World Cups in a career that ended when he was accused in the match-fixing scandal. He was banned for life by India’s cricket regulator BCCI, but the ban was lifted in 2006.
Mohammad Azharuddin was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009 from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh but he lost the 2014 polls from Rajasthan’s Tonk-Sawai Madhopur constituency.
The Congress has also announced B M Vinod Kumar and Jaffer Javed as the state unit’s Vice Presidents.
