Gunjan Saxena Movie Review: Gunjan Saxena starring Janhvi Kapoor, Angad Bedi, Pankaj Tripathi and Vineet Kumar Singh, directed by Sharan Sharma is available on Netiflix. It is based on the life of Indian Air Force Pilot Gunjan Saxena, who fought the Kargil War for India.  Let’s see the story of Gunjan Saxena.

Story:    Gunja Saxena(Janhvi Kapoor) is a very bright student in school and she wants to become a pilot. Though her mother Kirti Saxena (Ayesha Raza Mishra) and brother Anshuman (Angad Bedi) are against her idea but her father(Anup Saxena) encourages her. Her father suggests Gunjan Saxena to join the Indian Air Force. The rest of the story is as to how Gunja Saxena fights the Kargil war for the country.

Plus Points:
Performance
Climax

Minus Points:
Few scenes predictable
Little bit dragged
Editing

Performance: Pankaj Tripathi shines as Anup. The performance of Janhvi Kapoor is highlighted.  She makes an earnest protagonist, and lends charm and a youthful determination to Gunjan Saxena’ character. The real Gunjan was only 24 after all, when she went on to serve in Kargil war in 1999.   Ayesha Raza Mishra’ character is not hashed out too well and could have been written better to match the depth of Anup Saxena.  Manav Vij has a neat cameo as Gunjan Saxena’s supervisor Gautam.

Technical: In fact, the film is also co-written by two men – director Sharan and Nikhil Mehrotra. In Gunjan Saxena, the scenes where the male officers exclude her on the pretext of her “safety” as a woman and “national security”, this differentiation is maintained. There is no chest-thumping music to celebrate love for the country in this film of Janhvi Kapoor.  Heavy-duty VFX is used. Dialogues are superb. The production design, music and BGM are perfect.

Analysis: Too much time is spent on the childhood scenes of Gunjan Saxena. The movie is filled with feminist scenes. . Interestingly, there was another woman pilot with real Gunjan Saxena in the IAF – Srividya Rajan. She and Gunjan Saxena became the first Indian women to fly Cheetah helicopter to evacuate injured soldiers. The Indian air force pilots are showcased as those who never encourage women pilots.
