The 93rd annual Academy Awards, which were held in a unique fashion in 2021 as the attendees observed social distancing while going maskless, made history before the 1st award was even handed out.
It was the first time an all the Black producing team was nominated for best picture, the first time two actors of Asian descent received a nod for the best actor and the first year that two women were nominated for the best director. Academy Awards 2021 were dominated by Nomadland. Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress – all three major awards were won by the film Nomadland.
The presenters took the stage to announce the Oscars winners and the evening concluded with Joaquin Phoenix announcing the award for Best Actor. The best actor award was won by Anthony Hopkins for The Father. The movie Nomadland won big this year. The film Nomadland won Best Picture, the Best Actress for Frances McDormand and the Best Director for Chloe Zhao. Chloe is the 2nd woman to win this year in the Academy’s 93 years of giving awards.
In the ‘In Memoriam’ section of the 93rd Academy Awards, costume designer Bhanu Athaiya and Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan were honoured. They were passed away in 2020.
