After the High Court imposed a stay order on AP government’s order mandating online ticket sales, close to 400 cinema halls across Andhra Pradesh have shut running at present. Cut to this, the reason behind the theatres’ shut down is the low audience turnout.
It is said to be incurring losses to exhibitors, with theatre management cost hiking up. On the opening day itself, many of the recent releases reported 10 headcount per show. It results in a negative share from the starting day itself, which is a huge loss.
Operating a single show in an AC theatre costs Rs 5000 and in non-AC theatres, it costs Rs 2000. There are also extra costs like cleaning and other activities. Due to the invariance between these costs and low turnout, least revenues led the theatre authorities to close them temporarily. We can expect the restart of theatres during the arrival of the biggest movies.
