Mahaan Movie Review: Vikram, Dhruv Vikram, Simha, Simran, Sananth, Muthukumar starrer action drama Mahanna, helmed by Karthik Subbaraj is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Let’s see the  story of Mahaan.

Story: A boy born around when India gained independence and named after his freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi –  Gandhi Mahaan (Vikram) grows up to be a school teacher, but he feels that he is not free and is shackled to the ideals and strict laws laid down by his wife (Simran). She heads for North India along with their son. Later  Mahaan helps his friend Satya (Bobby Simha) in his liquor business. After twenty year,  Gandhi Mahaan’s son Dada (Dhruv) comes to Vizag, and brings the challenges for the father.  What happens next form the rest of the story.

 Plus points:

  • Vikram
  • Performance
  • Climax

Minus Points:

  • Flashback episode First half
  • Editing

Performance:  Chiyaan Vikram has delivered his fantastic performance.  He plays Gandhi Mahaan, who is born into a family of freedom fighters. Fed up of a monotonous life, Mahaan decides to break rules and enjoy his life. Simran essays the role of  Nachi, his wife, is ok.  He doesn’t have much to do, but pulls off Nachi role. Dhruv in the role of Dadabhai Naoroji aka Dada performs well. He is seen on a mission to eliminate his father and his business.  Mahaan is Vikram’s one-man show and he steals it with ease. Bobby Simhaa’s makeover is highlighted.

Technical: The story of Mahaan lacks freshness and except for a long yet engrossing argument between Gandhi Mahaan and his wife. The movie Mahaan benefits from the cinematography that elevates the ordinary writing, but it looks like a slick package. Mahaan is a visually stunning film. The costumes, and the looks, especially of Vikram, are marked with swag.  The action sequences between Vikram and Dhruv are wonderfully choreographed. The  production value and BGM are good.

Analysis:  Karthik Subbaraj‘ magnum opus Mahaan ends up testing the patience of the viewers because the cat-and-mouse game you’re watching is hardly intriguing. The central point of  the film  is about prohibition and the liquor mafia but the movie is a gangster drama that revolves around father and son.
